The social security number (SV number) is a personal identifier you need if you work or receive social benefits in Germany. It is used to manage your social security contributions and verify entitlements like pensions, health insurance, or unemployment benefits.
When do you receive the social security number?
- When you start your first part-time or full-time job, the German Pension Insurance will automatically issue you a social security certificate (Sozialversicherungsausweis).
- If you don’t yet have a social security number, your employer will handle the application for you.
Important notes:
- The social security certificate is free of charge.
- You will automatically receive it when you begin your first employment.
